Joel DeWitt will be one of the performers in the fourth annual Sounds of the Highlands Concert, on his birthday, June 13, 2009. Joel has played in all the previous Sounds of the Highlands concerts. He is a graduate of Julliard School of Music and plays the violin. He and pianist Julia Muench will be playing together in public for the first time. They will play Camille Saint-Saën’s “Havanaise”. Joel works full time as a computer programmer to support himself and his family. He is a founding member of the Arts Council and is now a Trustee and Co Chairs the Membership Committee.
Tuesdays throughout the summer,
Paintouts have started! AH resident artist Marge Levine has begun the Paintouts. A group of ten artists were spotted on Grand Avenue painting and drawing the peanut stone bridge on Tuesday, May 19th.
Every Tuesday through July, Marge and Arts Council member David Byrne will gather with other painters who paint in different mediums. Marge is there as a resource and a helper. They meet at 9 am at the Gazebo in the Municipal Harbor and decide to work together or separately. At noon, they again gather at the Gazebo to critique each other’s work.
Marge said that it feels wonderful to work along side other artists, to meet new people and to see each other’s work. Here is an opportunity for artists to meet new people, and new artists have shown up each week. Word is getting around and she hopes more people will come.
In case of rain, the artists do not meet. Artists are responsible for bringing their own supplies.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
Marge Levine is an award winning pastel painter, exhibits nationally, and is represented in many museums and private collections. Marge is in a show of pastel paintings by New Jersey artists starting on Sunday, May 31st until June 24th . This show is at the Guild of Creative Art, 620 Broad Street, Route 35, Shrewsbury. Works of some painters who have been participating in the Tuesday paint outs are being shown, too. You can check our website and see the other info listed about Marge and her accomplishments.
July 18
FilmOneFest will make its debut on July 18 with a selection of very short films. If you’d like to enter a one-minute film, there’s still time – the deadline is June 20. Rules and an entry form are on the festival website – http://www.FilmOneFest.org The festival will also include music, food and art. The music will start at 7 pm and the films will start at 9 pm. This is an outdoor festival, and rain will push the festival indoors at St. Agnes’s Parish Center, 55 South Street, Atlantic Highlands.
Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor, Saturday, July 18th. Free.
The Arts Council and the FilmOneFest are supporters of the Atlantic Highlands Food Pantry. At the FilmOneFest Benefit Dinner, and also at the Benefit Screening of Woody Allen’s film ‘Whatever Works’, we collected non-perishable foods. We will also collect food donations during FilmOneFest. Arts Council Marketing Director Lynn Fylak has secured a donation of 20 cases of Pepsi-Co foods for the Food Pantry. Victor Zak is the Arts Council member who is coordinating food donations. If you would like to make a donation, contact Victor at info@atlantichighlandsartscouncil.com
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
Robert O’Connor is the driving force behind the new FilmOneFest . Robert is a filmmaker, a painter and a photographer. Robert has been making videos for several years and has attended many film festivals. He felt that he could handle the technical aspects of this film festival and was excited about bringing that vision to Atlantic Highlands.
Robert had a show titled “Empathy” last year at the NY Studio Gallery in the Lower East Side. He and other artists are currently exhibiting their works in a show there titled “Every Man’s an Angel.”
Robert is currently serving as the Vice President of the Arts Council. Part of Roberts’ art is to be involved in community. This is very important to him. He works part-time in a home medical company.

At the February Open Mic, Live at the Blue Bay Inn, Julie Gartenberg presented the 2008 Friends of the Arts Award to AH residents Sark and Dido Krikorian, in recognition of their generous support of the arts and dedication to the cultural life of Atlantic Highlands and the Bayshore. Sark and Dido Krikorian have been staunch supporters of Arts Council activities and events including concerts and FilmOneFest. They have been especially generous in their enthusiasm for our Open Mic, Live at the Blue Bay Inn, donating space and optimistic support for the open mic when it was just getting off the ground. Their continued support has helped to make Live at the Blue Bay Inn a popular monthly music event, offering performance opportunities and entertainment to musicians and music lovers in our community.

Inside the Arts Council
Julie Gartenberg, President
During the past four years that I have been involved with the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council, I have witnessed the wonderful spirit of community among people who have volunteered their time and talents to make the dreams of this organization a reality. Whether putting up posters or booking artists, organizing a benefit, or looking up addresses in the phone book, every effort by these folks has brought us to the present. The Arts Council is more vibrant than ever and we want you to know about it. As the new President of the Council, I have been blessed to be involved with such a dedicated and creative group of people beside me.
Why do we do volunteer in an arts council? Art inspires people to feel and to think differently, even if only momentarily. It is a medium - whether visual, verbal or musical - that offers us inspiration, encouragement or a truth about something. It touches the mind and heart. It helps us, as a society, to cultivate a sensitive understanding of the environment, explore core values and develop intellectual and political awareness. Art becomes an expression of a way to unite community. We want to be part of that process.
Members of the Arts Council have been working hard during the last several months to restructure the organization so we are more effective in our efforts. We have developed some exciting new programs for you and are streamlining old ones as we move ahead to finish this season and prepare for the next. With our shared goals and commitment, we continue to sink roots into the community on all levels: We bring the arts to town, we promote local talent, we encourage residents to explore their own creativity, and we support the business community by encouraging people to shop locally.
Some activities we can do in our sleep. Others have seemed overwhelming, but we are confident we will work it out together. When we collaborate, we have gotten - and will continue to get - great results. We strive to continually learn and gain experience that will propel us into the uncharted waters of the future. And we have lots of fun along the way!
We hope you find this newsletter of interest. We want you to know about our upcoming events. The last concert of the season, “Sounds of the Highlands IV”, on June 13 promotes our local professional talent and is a must-see. Our free, outdoor “FilmOneFest” on July 18 has been an amazing project to assemble and we are honored to have such a professional team, with the support of all of you, helping us to make it a reality. “Live at the Blue Bay” open mic night has, for the past three months, been standing room only with varied and refreshing talent. And, for the second summer in a row, we are holding weekly plein air “Paint Outs” on Tuesdays at the harbor.
Besides our events, we want to introduce you to some of the people behind the face of the Arts Council. We have chosen to tell stories about three members, all accomplished professionals in their field, to laud them for their work and thank them for their association with us.
And, last but not least, we ask you to consider becoming a member of the Arts Council. People like you provide the energy, wisdom and resources to help us realize our dream of enriching the cultural life of the community.
Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you at our upcoming events. You can also check out our websites (www.atlantichighlandsartscouncil.com <http://www.atlantichighlandsartscouncil.com/> and www.filmonefest.org <http://www.filmonefest.org/> ) to keep up with what is happening. We welcome your comments, feedback and participation.
